HeartFirst Core Value: #emotionalintelligence
EQ is just as important as IQ. Actually, we believe it is MORE important.

We must ask ourselves: Are we thinking beings who feel or feeling beings who think?
If we want a balanced education which educates the whole person, we must educate the feeling sense as well as the thinking mind.
EQ is more of a predictor of future success in one’s career, relationships, health, and overall quality of life than IQ, yet our formal education systems spend so much time and energy educating the mind and in doing so neglect the heart.
We believe in educating the whole person, heart first. Emotional intelligence is our first priority. We believe that self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills are learned and must be valued, emphasized, taught, and practiced with intention throughout education from pre-k to university and ultimately throughout the entire lifespan of a human being .

Children are always told to pay attention in school, but rarely are they actually taught how to pay attention. Mindfulness practice actually gives them that skill set and helps them regulate and control their attention.

Scientific research has shown that mindfulness in schools:
-enhances focus
-increases attention span
-improves self-regulation
-reduces bullying
-increases compassion for self and others -reduces stress and anxiety
-improves overall emotional health and well-beings

So if you're not hearing mindfulness in some deep way as heartfulness, you're not really understanding it. Compassion and kindness towards oneself are intrinsically woven into it. You could think of mindfulness as wise and affectionate attention.” - Jon Kabat-Zinn

The heart is the missing piece of mindfulness in the west. Without the warm feelings of love, compassion, and kindness, mindfulness can feel cold, heady, and even detached. Mindfulness practice was intended to be practiced from a place of love, bringing a quality of compassion and kindness to whatever experience is happening in the present moment.
According to Heartfulness.org, “Heartfulness is a heart-centered approach to life, where you will be able to live each moment by the heart. It is to live naturally, in tune with the qualities of a heart enlightened and refined through spiritual practice. These qualities include compassion, sincerity, contentment, truthfulness, and forgiveness; attitudes such as generosity and acceptance; and the heart’s fundamental nature, which is love.” Heartfulness is about connecting to the heart and its qualities of love, compassion, kindness, and empathy. It is opening our hearts to unconditional love for ourselves and for the world around us. Heartfulness is a practice of being present in the heart and creating space between thoughts, reducing mental chatter about the past or future.

Heartfulness is of value in education, because it is who we are. It is our true nature. Each one of us has within us the capacity for love, compassion, empathy, acceptance, tolerance, and forgiveness. These are the highest human virtues and our education system should reflect their importance. If these inner values were our educational benchmarks and the heart was the central focus of education, imagine how that could change society. Each classroom is a community and is a model for the students of the greater community as a whole. By creating a strong educational community, we enhance learning and promote feelings of well-being and belonging amongst students.
A plethora of research exists confirming the benefits of building strong communities in schools. These include: *Social and emotional competence. (Solomon et al., 2000)
*Greater academic motivation. (Solomon, Battistich, Watson, et al., 2000)
*Increased altruism. (Schaps, Battistich, & Solomon, 1997)
*Decreased drug use and violence. (Resnick et al., 1997)

HeartFirst Core Value: #connection
Connection is vital to education. We believe in education that teaches through relationship; through human connection. This method of teaching is student centered rather than subject centered and is collaborative rather than competitive.

We know that feelings of community and belongingness are what give life meaning, so we want to foster these values and build connections in the classroom in order to enhance learning, motivation, and ultimately, quality of life.

Students need to feel connected to what they’re learning. Without connection, there is no real interest or tie in education. For true learning to take place, a student has to care; he has to relate to it and see himself in it. We believe in an education that matters to students and is relevant for them. This all begins with connection: connecting to the people in their classroom, to their community, to humanity, and to all of nature as a whole.
