Self-regulation is a super power!

But, really! We view self-regulation as one of the most important skills you could ever learn.

At HeartFirst Education we focus on educating the whole person, heart first. We recognize that learning is about so much more than standardized test scores.

We don’t stress about a child’s score on a spelling test. What matters to us is how well that child manages stress and adapts to an ever changing world.

There are so many things in life that are out of our control. But one thing we can control is ourselves (if we know how to self-regulate).

We create curriculum to teach children self-regulation, mindfulness, stress management, emotional intelligence, growth mindset, and virtue development.

EQ is just as important as IQ. Actually, we believe it is MORE important.

We must ask ourselves: Are we thinking beings who feel or feeling beings who think?
If we want a balanced education which educates the whole person, we must educate the feeling sense as well as the thinking mind.
EQ is more of a predictor of future success in one’s career, relationships, health, and overall quality of life than IQ, yet our formal education systems spend so much time and energy educating the mind and in doing so neglect the heart.
We believe in educating the whole person, heart first. Emotional intelligence is our first priority. We believe that self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills are learned and must be valued, emphasized, taught, and practiced with intention throughout education from pre-k to university and ultimately throughout the entire lifespan of a human being .

Children are always told to pay attention in school, but rarely are they actually taught how to pay attention. Mindfulness practice actually gives them that skill set and helps them regulate and control their attention.

Scientific research has shown that mindfulness in schools:

-improves self-regulation
-reduces bullying
-increases compassion for self and others -reduces stress and anxiety

So if you're not hearing mindfulness in some deep way as heartfulness, you're not really understanding it. Compassion and kindness towards oneself are intrinsically woven into it. You could think of mindfulness as wise and affectionate attention.” - Jon Kabat-Zinn

The heart is the missing piece of mindfulness in the west. Without the warm feelings of love, compassion, and kindness, mindfulness can feel cold, heady, and even detached. Mindfulness practice was intended to be practiced from a place of love, bringing a quality of compassion and kindness to whatever experience is happening in the present moment.
According to Heartfulness.org, “Heartfulness is a heart-centered approach to life, where you will be able to live each moment by the heart. It is to live naturally, in tune with the qualities of a heart enlightened and refined through spiritual practice. These qualities include compassion, sincerity, contentment, truthfulness, and forgiveness; attitudes such as generosity and acceptance; and the heart’s fundamental nature, which is love.” Heartfulness is about connecting to the heart and its qualities of love, compassion, kindness, and empathy. It is opening our hearts to unconditional love for ourselves and for the world around us. Heartfulness is a practice of being present in the heart and creating space between thoughts, reducing mental chatter about the past or future.

Heartfulness is of value in education, because it is who we are. It is our true nature. Each one of us has within us the capacity for love, compassion, empathy, acceptance, tolerance, and forgiveness. These are the highest human virtues and our education system should reflect their importance. If these inner values were our educational benchmarks and the heart was the central focus of education, imagine how that could change society.
