What is the Warrior's Way?

The Warrior’s Way is a fun and empowering, interactive online course designed to help children learn anxiety management skills in a creative and light-hearted way. Learners will engage with their worries and fears through play, story telling, creative writing, movement, art, games, self-reflection, and peer discussion. This course is full of evidence-based strategies like cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, expressive arts therapy, bibliotherapy, and neuroscience. Some specific skills your child will develop and practice in this holistic, strength-based program include:
  • Self-Awareness: Children will learn more about how their brain works and deepen their understanding of their own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
  • Self-Regulation: Kids will develop skills to manage difficult emotions like anxiety in healthy, constructive ways.
  • Emotional Intelligence: EQ is more of an indicator of future success than IQ! Children in the course will get an EQ boost by acquiring skills to better recognize, understand, manage, and express their emotions.
  • Mindfulness: Mindfulness practices help children reduce worry and fearful thoughts by anchoring their awareness in the present moment and focusing on their sensory experience.
  • Positive Thinking: Kids will learn how to recognize, challenge, and replace negative thinking with positive, healthy talk.
  • Impulse Control: Anxiety can sometimes lead us to act quickly, without thinking first about the possible outcome of our choices. Children will practice “the pause” and learn how to respond, rather than react to difficult events.
  • Resilience: Resilience helps us bounce back from difficult situations. This course will arm your child with tools to cope not only with anxiety, but with stress as well.

Children will walk away with more than 25 coping skills to manage anxiety like a warrior!

Weekly Syllabus

Module 1 (1) (1)

Week 1: What Is Worry?

The course begins with journaling and discussion based on the question “What is Worry?”.  In this module, students will learn how to define, label, and recognize worry and anxiety in themselves and others. They will practice coping skills from cognitive behavioral therapy as well as engage creatively with their worries through imagination, drawing, and storytelling.

Module 2 (1)

Week 2: Why Do We Worry?

This module begins with journaling and discussion regarding the question, “Why Do We Worry?”  Learners will receive a brief introduction to the human brain, limbic system, and fight, flight, or freeze response. They will deepen their understanding of the purpose and function of worry and practice coping skills to help calm the nervous system and feel safe and grounded in the present moment.

Module 4 (1)

Week 3: When Do Worries Happen?

This week, we’ll start with the question, “When Do Worries Happen?”. Worries are about the future, but they happen in the present moment. Students will be introduced to mindfulness as a tool to stay present and reduce worry. They will learn deep breathing, mindful movement, and other mindfulness practices to help focus their minds and calm their bodies.

Module 3 (1)

Week 4: Where Are Worries Anyways?

In Week 4, we’ll answer the question, “Where are Worries Anyways?”. Learners will be asked to contemplate the nature of worry and where it happens (first in their imagination then leading to physical sensations in the body). They’ll learn about the human mind, examine their thinking processes, and discover ways to recognize and replace unhealthy thinking with positive, healthy self-talk. We will also discuss the mind-body connection, giving children a chance to reflect on how they experience anxiety in their bodies

Week 5

Week 5: Who is the Worrier & Who is the Warrior?

Module 5 begins with two questions: “Who is the Worrier?” and “Who is the Warrior?”. Learners will discover that the one who worries and the one who overcomes the worry are both parts of themselves. They will learn how to listen to the worrier to recognize a problem and let the warrior take over and do the problem solving. Students will play a fun battle game with their “worrier” and “warrior” to help them process and integrate their learning.

Week 6

Week 6: How Do You Cope With Worry?

The final module begins with the question “How do You Cope with Worry?” We’ll review and discuss all of the coping skills we’ve learned throughout the course. Students will be empowered to consider which coping skills work best for them and create their own worry toolkit to help them remember to use their coping skills whenever they feel worried or anxious. We’ll wrap up the course with a creative project involving both the “worrier” and the “warrior”.

Meet The Teacher

Brittany Tackett, MA

Hi there! My name is Brittany Tackett, founder of HeartFirst Education, whose mission is to educate the whole person, heart, first.

I wear many hats, like therapist and yoga teacher, to name a few, but my most important role is mom.

My favorite hobbies are hula hooping, hiking, traveling, yoga, reading books, and spending time with kids. Children always inspire me to play more, laugh more, and enjoy this wonderful experience called life.

I felt inspired to create this course after working as a school-based mental health therapist for elementary-aged children.

I realized that a lot of kids struggle with anxiety and I wanted to create a fun, light-hearted course to help them work through their worries and learn healthy tools to cope.

I, too have struggled with anxiety and have even experienced a few panic attacks in the past. The tools I share in this course are what have helped me overcome my fears, better manage my personal stress and anxiety, and find my own sense of calm.

I hope the tools shared in this course help you to do the same!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

This course is best suited for children ages 7-12. However, all children develop differently. It may be appropriate for some young children with parent support or willing teenagers that aren’t resistant to getting in touch with their inner child.

It’s okay if your child doesn’t have computer skills. This course is a great opportunity for your child to learn! We encourage parents to navigate the network with their children and support them throughout the course. Think of it as a learning adventure you can embark on together!

Yes and no. I encourage you to participate, but it’s ultimately up to you! The more present you can be, the better! This is especially true for younger children who still rely on co-regulation to navigate their emotions. Your child will likely need your emotional support as well as assistance with the technological aspects of the course.

Older children may be more comfortable working independently through the program with minimal guidance. Do what works best for your family. You may find that your child works through some lessons independently and others with your support.

Absolutely, but s/he will need your support!  Each module has videos which explain the course content in addition to the text descriptions. However, course navigation requires some reading. There are journal prompts and discussion questions for your child to answer as well. So, s/he may need your help with both reading and typing. This course can be a great opportunity to help your child practice reading. But, the course can also be taken by a child who cannot read when a parent navigates the course with the child. While it is an online course, many of the course activities take place away from the computer so you will read the instructions and then you and your child can complete the activity. Examples of these activities include drawing, movement, meditation, storytelling, and intentional communication.

This course was created as a 6 week program. There are 6 modules, one per week. Each week, you will receive an email from me with added guidance and support for that week’s content and activities. However, this is a self-paced course and you have lifetime access. You can choose to follow along at the weekly pace, or take your time working through the lessons.

For maximum benefits, I do encourage you to give at least 10-15 intentional minutes of time practicing some of the coping skills taught in this course.

Yes. The course does not allow you to progress to a new lesson without completing the previous one first. However, you can go back and review course earlier content at any time.

There are a few things you’ll need for this course in addition to an internet connection and device:

  • Drawing materials and paper
  • Craft materials of your choice to make a “worry container”
  • Access to a printer is helpful for some printables (but not absolutely necessary)
